Broken

Wednesday night, in the middle of reading the boys their bedtime story, Ludo decided to pee on the floor in front of us. I put down the book and tried to chase the dog down to punish him. In the midst of stomping around the house, I stepped wrong and stepped down on my ankle hard, causing the outer bone in my foot to snap. I immediately knew it was broken, and went down onto my knees, and then laid down on my tummy. Fortunately I had my cell phone in my pocket. I immediately called my mom to come take care of the boys, and then I called for an ambulance to take me to the hospital. The boys were very freaked out, but I tried to explain to them that I had broken a bone before, and I would be okay. Then the paramedics took me to the E.R.

The E.R. didn’t do anything for me but put my foot in a boot and send me home on crutches. Thank goodness for TJ, because he has been the most helpful person ever for me! He came to the hospital, took me home, and helped me out for a couple of days while I adjusted to the injury.

Thursday morning I went to an Orthopedic Surgeon in Des Moines, and he scheduled me for surgery on Dec. 18th. I will be getting a permanent screw put into the bone to hold it together. I will be required to stay off my foot for an additional 6-7 weeks after the surgery.

I feel blessed to have plenty of friends and family to help me out with my own care, and also with the care of my boys during this time. I don’t know what I’d do without them.

This is a true account written in my own words during the time it happened. I’ve lightly edited it for clarity in the present day (2026), with minimal exclusions, while keeping the original voice and meaning intact.

And what do you have to say about that?
